Gerald Ryan In Box Seat To Win 2012 Golden Slipper

April 5th, 2012

Trainer Gerald Ryan is hopeful one of his three representatives can win the 2012 Golden Slipper at Rosehill Racecourse this Saturday.

Ryan has Amorino, Snitzerland and Cavalry Rose in the $3.5 million race, which is the richest two-year-old race in the world.

The trainer is pleased with the progress from all his 2012 Golden Slipper hopefuls.

“All three of my Slipper runners are bright and well and at the top of their game,” Ryan said.

“Amorino worked very well on Monday, Snitzerland was brilliant with the blinkers on in her gallop on Tuesday, and Cavalry Rose has had an easy week but she has come through last Saturday’s race better than ever.

“The three of them didn’t cost a lot of money and they have earned their way into the race. We’re in with a chance.”

Ryan is still thinking about his luckless history in the 2012 Golden Slipper, with Snitzel’s barrier antics last year being the most recent bad luck Golden Slipper story.

“Snitzel reared in the gates and hit his head at top of the bar,” he said.

“He came back in after the race with a lump across the bridge of his nose which he never had before. He still has that lump to this day.

“Glen Boss was adamant the horse should never have been allowed to run.

“He said Snitzel raced stunned, sort of half unconscious in the race.”

Ryan’s turbulent relationship with the Golden Slipper has been a long time in the making.

“Paint had won the Blue Diamond (in 1996) and I was pretty confident he could win the Golden Slipper but he suffered interference and then Merlene got a dream run through to beat him,” Ryan said.

“Hurricane Sky (1994) ran a close fifth, Exclusive Halo (1995) wasn’t beaten far in a very strong Golden Slipper, and I might have made a mistake putting blinkers on Hinchinbrook (2010) a couple of years ago. Darren Beadman came in after the race and said if the colt wasn’t wearing blinkers he would have won.”
